marathonRegistration is officially open for the 2010 Pasadena Marathon next February. There will also be a half marathon, 5k, bike tour, and fun run. Early registration rates are still available. If you’re interested in signing up, but nervous about never having run a marathon, check out the 24-week Pasadena marathon training program. It’s designed to accommodate runners and walkers at different levels of experience—from first timers to marathon veterans.

Getting this marathon created was rough, especially after last year’s first outing. The first time out, reports Pasadena Star-News, the Pasadena Marathon was canceled two hours before start time by smoke from last November’s wildfires. Rescheduled to March, the event was held in a drenching rainstorm. Then the Los Angeles Marathon moved its 2010 run date from May to March 21—the same date the fledgling Pasadena event had just announced for its second outing.

But the resulting quick reshuffle to Feb. 21 has become a plus, said Israel Estrada, executive director of Pasadena Forward, the nonprofit producer of the marathon, half-marathon, Bike Tour and 5K and Fun Run/Walk.

“It does affect us, but I think in a positive way,” Estrada said. “The Los Angeles Marathon is a full marathon, 26.2 miles, and the bike tour’s been changed. The last I heard they’re not doing it on the same day or on the same route, so I think that’s beneficial to us.
