Student teams from 12 local elementary, middle, and high schools will pit their self-created and software-enabled LEGO ® robots against the clock in the 3rd Annual Southern California NASA Explorer Schools Robotics Competition.

The small robots must correctly perform different tasks within two minutes. The tasks include retrieving planetary mineral formations and rescuing a stranded ”moon rat,” or small robot, on a simulated Mars surface. Students built and programmed their LEGO ® robots over several months using laptop computers for this competition, which was designed
to engage them in math, science, technology, and engineering.

This event will be held on today, Tuesday, March 17, from 12:15 to 2:15 p.m. The awards ceremony runs from 3:00 to 3:30 p.m at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory’s von Kármán Auditorium. JPL is located off the Oak Grove Drive exit of the 210 (Foothill) Freeway. Visitor parking is to the left (west) of the JPL main guard gate, across the street from the JPL Visitor Center.
