preschoolPASADENA – Inside the Mother’s Club Family Learning Center’s spacious building on Fair Oaks Avenue, preschool students busily work on their shapes and colors, while about 20 parents study English in two nearby classrooms.

“We do a lot of in-house training and assessments, where we look at curriculum, bring in the community resources to help us teach better,” Executive Director Sue Kujawa said. “If we had more money, it would be wonderful.”

California is slated to receive $210 million from the stimulus package to improve Head Start and Early Head Start programs for toddlers to 4-year-olds whose families meet low-income thresholds. Apart from those two programs, an additional $220 million is headed to the state to enhance early child education and child care for infants and toddlers.

“In talking with Pasadena Unified officials, they are telling us there are still children who don’t go to preschool at all,” Kujawa said. “We could serve an additional 20 students we also hope to provide some programs for their parents as well.”
