Pasadena’s chain saws do their damage on Colorado Blvd

In response to citizen outrage over the midnight massacre of some 43 mature shade trees along Pasadena’s Colorado Boulevard, the City Council will soon meet to discuss the future of the urban forest.
Some residents protested by standing in silent vigil through the night as the chain saws took down tree after tree.
Others provided information about new technologies that mitigate the root damage caused by ficus trees such as is used in Santa Monica. To its credit, the City Council responded by calling for a two-week moratorium until staff could review plans related to trees and recent environmental legislation.
That moratorium ended March 16 – the big question now is whether more trees will be hacked and skinny, often-leafless ginkgos and palms will be planted.
At issue in Pasadena is whether the city intends to protect its public trees or mow them down by following a decades-old plan that now has little public support.
