National Night Out (NNO) is a crime and drug prevention program that occurs in cities all over the country as a way to support local communities and raise awareness for drug and crime prevention programs. Last year, over 15,000 communities participated in the program with a total of 37 million people.

The Pasadena Police Department invited the community to join them in this year’s National Night Out event at Villa Parke Community Center where Mayor Bill Bogaard, Commander Michael Korpal, and Assembly Member Anthony Portantino encouraged the community to work together with police and other officials in fighting back against crime and drugs. Many other block parties took place all over the city and over 600 residents gathered together with local officials and other city members to help send the message that the community is serious about drug and crime prevention in their neighborhoods. Residents were able to enjoy food and music while taking the time to sign petitions for important local issues. Activities for teens and children were also available.

The National Association of Town Watch (NATW) says National Night Out is designed to:

• Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness;
• Generate support for, and participation in, local anticrime programs;
• Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and
• Send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

The NATW knows this current economy places financial stress on many, so they’ve taken the necessary steps to make NNO a cost-effective program. They partner with the Target corporation and law enforcement agencies as a way to provide the resources for NNO so that communities can enjoy a night out together while discussing local issues.

Local sponsors for the event included Pasadena Police Department, Pasadena Human Services and Recreation Department, Neighborhood Connections Office, Pasadena Fire Department, Pasadena Planning and Development Department, Northwest Programs Office and Pasadena Vice Mayor Victor Gordo.
