14th Annual Butterfly Release

butterfly1Happy St. Patty’s Day! I hope you’re enjoying a nice tall glass of green beer on this fine spring day. I know it’s not technically spring yet, but the weather says otherwise. And in exactly one month the Kidspace Children’s Museum will be hosting a delightful springtime event, the 14th Annual Butterfly Release. You can witness the release of hundreds of live butterflies! The actual release takes place at 2 pm on April 17, but it is advised to arrive early to avoid lines.

  • Location:  Kidspace Children’s Museum (480 N Arroyo Blvd, Pasadena)
  • Date/Time: April 17 from 10 am – 5 pm (arrive early for the 2 pm release)
  • Admission: $10

Guests will enjoy…

  • Craft stations at which kids can make child-sized butterfly wings and antenna headbands
  • An art table where kids can create photo collages based on the imagery in the book, Beatrice is a Butterfly by Olivia Rosewood
  • A food-based activity at the Museum’s Harvest Corner called “Eat Like a Butterfly” where kids use straws of different lengths to try to drink the nectar
  • An interactive science program at 10:30am in the Stone Hollow Amphitheater that presents the various defense mechanisms of both caterpillars and butterflies
  • Eric Carle story times (The Hungry Hungry Caterpillar) in the Early Childhood Learning Center at 11am and 3 pm for kids under three
  • For small additional charges, kids and families can enjoy face painting, balloon art, temporary tattoos and a souvenir photos
  • Enjoy a musical performance by kid-indie rock band, Egg, at 1:30pm. A short insect lifecycle program will take place right after, followed by a countdown and the release of more than 600 live butterflies into the Kidspace Gardens by both staff and guests.

Kids can also release their very own butterfly at the 14th Annual Butterfly Release.. Starting today kids can adopt a caterpillar by visiting the Busy Bee Learning Store at the museum. Raise the insect from pupa to chrysalis to beautiful butterfly following the included directions. Return to Kidspace on April 17 to release your butterfly into its natural habitat. Adoptions are $5 per caterpillar and available while supplies last. Call (626) 449-9144 ext. 5223 to check inventories.
