Remembering Caltech Aeronautics Professor Hans Liepmann

liepmann-h_80Educator and researcher Hans Wolfgang Liepmann passed away at his home in La Canada Flintridge it was announced by the school. He was 94.

Liepmann, who was the Theodore von Karman Professor of Aeronautics at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), was a professor and pioneering researcher in fluid mechanics. He joined the Caltech in 1939. Between 1972 and 1985, he served as the school’s third director of its Graduate Aeronautical Laboratories (GALCIT). The school also said he made valuable contributions to the aeronautics field.

Mentoring more than 60 PhD students and hundreds of undergraduates at GALCIT, Liepmann helped establish the school’s fundamental research approach and rigorous curriculum. The students he taught went on to become leaders in the aerospace industry and academia, according to Caltech school officials.
