diadelosmuertosEl Dia de Los Muertos (the Day of the Dead) is a holiday celebrated in Mexico and by Latin Americans in the U.S. The holiday gathers family and friends together to pray for and remember loved ones who have died. This traditionally includes building private altars honoring the deceased, using sugar skulls, marigolds, and the favorite foods and beverages of the departed as gifts to lay at their graves. If you’ve never experienced this Mexican tradition, I highly recommend attending the following events. I had the pleasure of seeing these traditions played out at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery a few years ago, and it was just beautiful. I’ve never seen anything like it. Here are some local events to check out…

From the Official Blog of the Pasadena Playhouse District:

Visit Zona Rosa to see the 15th Annual Dia de Los Muertos Art Exhibit on display from October 10 – November 8, 2009. The artist reception will be held on Thursday, October 29 from 6pm-10pm with a special children’s opening at 4pm and musical performance by CAVA from 8:30-11pm. Zona Rosa is located at 15 South El Molino Avenue Pasadena, California 91101. For more information call (626) 793-2334 or visit the website.

Zona Rosa Caffe, located in the heart of the Pasadena Playhouse District, has an atmosphere reminiscent of Mexico City. The architecture is suggestive of Mexican culture and the Latin music contributes to the overall vibe of the place. It’s the perfect setting for celebrating Dia De Los Meurtos.
